Buckeye Local - October 14, 2016

On this cool Friday evening, the East Liverpool High School football team won the battle, but thought they lost the war when their star quarterback, Austin Mayfield, was ejected from the game for “targeting.”

The unfortunate incident occurred at midfield with 2:04 remaining in the second quarter as part of a play that saw Mayfield find Peyton Adkins from his own 35-yard line for an apparent score; however, the big quarterback was flagged for over-aggressively hitting a Buckeye defender, thus the ejection.

Before leaving the game, Mayfield had scored three TDs, each on runs of five yards, and found Zach Gill from three yards out with 10:06 left to play before the intermission. The other first half score for the Blue and White came on a six-yard run by Hayden Jackson in the waning seconds of the first quarter.

Buckeye’s only score in the half occurred when Jared Moore picked off a Payton Reed pass and rambled 75 yards with 14 seconds left in the second quarter, making the score 35-6. A two-point conversion attempt failed.

Without Mayfield, Coach Josh Ludwig and his team were slow to find their rhythm as both Reed and Adkins took their turns at quarterback, until Jackson crossed the goal line from ten yards out with 3:34 remaining in the third quarter. At this point, following Dylan Kidder’s sixth extra point of the contest, it was 42-6.

Not willing to give in, Quarterback Danny Callarik then found Sean Millard from his own 40, resulting in a score for Coach John Holman and his team. Once again, a two-point conversion attempt failed, and it was 42-12.

A pair of underclassmen backs then made their presence felt when sophomore fullback Lane Kopras  scored from the 11 with 6:40 on, what by now was a running fourth quarter clock, and freshman Derek Carter scored twice with runs of 42 and 18 yards as the game droned on. Kidder converted on all three TDs giving him nine extra points on the night.

COACH’S COMMENTS:

“I was disappointed when Austin was ejected, and immediately went to work on having the call by Referee Jon Hamm and his crew overturned. After viewing the film, there was clearly no infraction. Austin had completed the pass to Peyton Adkins then used his hands to assure a clear path to the goal”.

“My hat is off to the officials as well as to Buckeye athletic director Sam Jones, who is also a football official, for reversing the call. It would have been a sad night next week if Austin had been unable to walk with his family on senior night.”

DIGGER’S DUGOUT:

In an unusual turn of events, Mayfield’s second quarter ejection was reversed on the morning following the game when Coach Josh Ludwig contacted the official who had flagged the penalty. After reviewing the film, it was acknowledged that the call was in error. Had it stood, Mayfield would have been ineligible for next week’s game with Weirton and hurt his chances to set the all-time single season and career passing records for the Blue and White.

The big senior signal caller, with two games left in the season, has 1,450 yards passing in 2016 and 2,597 career stripes.

In the meantime, Dylan Kidder with nine extra points in the game tied Jared Zirillo with the single game conversion record set against Cleveland East in 2002.

Brian Miller (seven vs, Youngstown East in 1996) and Justin Barr (seven vs. Weirton in 2103) are in second place.

A host of kickers are in third place with six, including Barr vs, Cleveland East Tech in 2012, Jimmy Wood vs. Campbell Memorial in 2006, Brian Miller vs. Beaver Local in 1997 and John Twyford who successfully cleared the uprights six times in 2002 against both Buckeye Local and Salem.

Bernie Allen is the school’s all-time career leader from placement with 76 conversions. He booted six in a game on two occasions in 1956 vs. Salem and Toronto.

It was nice to see Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla on the sidelines. He is, without question, one of the most ubiquitous personalities in the Upper Ohio Valley.
